Since Hibana can control Akujiki completely, it is safe to say the Oboro had it wrong. apparently, you have to actually defeat Akujiki in a fight in order to beat it into submission. This is the Japanese original and it's actual translation compared to the English translation provided in game.
Nihongo: 古より伝わる、人の魂を食らう妖刀・・・・・・その名を『悪食』。
悪食を持つ者は、人の魂までをも支配できると言われる。
人はその偉大なる力を手に入れるために、戦い、殺しあった。
一人の忍の働きにより、忌まわしき歴史も終わりを迎えたかに思われた。
しかし、それは新たな戦いの始まりでもあった・・・・・・。
Romaji: Inishie yori tsutawaru, hito no tamashī o kurau yōtō sono na o “akujiki”. Akujiki o motsu mono wa, hito no tamashī made o mo shihai dekiru to iwa reru. Hito wa sono idainaru chikara o te ni ireru tame ni, tatakai,-goroshi atta. Hitori no shinobu no hataraki ni yori, imawashiki rekishi mo owari o mukaeta ka ni omowa reta. Shikashi, sore wa aratana tatakai no hajimari demo atta.
English translation: A weapon that consumes the souls of men, transmitted from olden times ...... Its name is "Akujiki." Those bearing Akujiki are said to be able to rule over even the souls of men. People fought and killed in order to gain that great power. Thanks to the actions of one shinobi, it had seemed that its abominable history ended. However, it was also the beginning of a new battle ....
In the in-game version, it never said that Akujiki's bearer was said to rule over the souls of men, but then from what the narrator in both languages says, Akujiki has long been sought by greedy men like Hiruko and the Nakatomi clan.
